LAST SECONDHAND AND HANDMADE FAIR IN 2011

Eko Pan and Domaći organized last “I have, I give and I live” fair, on December 3rd, 2011.

Fair was for all those who want to sell, buy, exchange or give something, and for all DIY artists.

In the year 2012, we are going to continue with this project, on a monthly level.

MR. GOODFREAK – PICTUREBOOK!

Members of Eko Pan are authors of a small project of picturebook “Mr. Goodfreak” and workshops “Goodfreak Woodfreak”.

Picturebook story is written by Ivana Francišković, member of Eko Pan. Book is ideal for children between age 5 and 10, but also for all those wishful for simple and witty story. Book is illustrated by Gordana Ivković, young artist from Karlovac.

Mr Goodfreak tells about unusual friendship between a small boy and a local freak – Mr. Goodfreak, who was once long ago called Veljko and lived in Vrlingrad, normal and happy. When cars and roads arrived Veljko disliked that so much that he escaped deep, deep into the woods. And nobody saw him never again.

Picturebook was published in October, by Naklada Nika Zagreb and supported by City of Karlovac.

Book promotions, together with recycling workshops will go around kindergartens, schools and libraries with aim to promote connection with books and reading, but also with nature and environment protection. Workshops will be guided by Sunčica Pjevac, also a member of Eko Pan.

STEPS FOR STRATEGY

Eko Pan as project leader for “Karlovac Rivers Management and Preservation” hosted a meeting for Thematical Councils for ENERGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE and for AGRICULTURE AND AGRONOMY. During both meetings, a SWOT analyses were done for specific areas. Should and how rivers be considered as renewable energy source was a discussion issue and it was a hard way to find common opinion on this subject. On the other hand, it was very simple task to recognize problems and deficiencies in infrastructure.
Karlovac has many potentials for development but this development could easily leave indelible traces on our environment.

Thematical council for agriculture had a constructive discussion about possibilities to improve conditions and regulations for producers and consumers. Quality and persistent promotion of a local production and consuming is highly important, and it can contribute in development of river tourism. Day by day farmers have to face with many problems and their existence depends on numerous factors. Through this strategy we will try to mark all this problems and suggest small projects that could benefit to all.

Project “Karlovac Rivers Management and Preservation” is financed by EU, IPA program. Project leader is Eko Pan and project partner is City of Karlovac. Project aim is Strategy for sustainable development of Karlovac rivers.

OLD STUFF AND DIY

On Saturday, November 12th, in Youth’s Centre Gaza, was a second hand/handmade fair “I HAVE, I GIVE AND I LIVE”. Fair was organized by members of Eko Pan and Domachi, to promote creativtiy, exchange and thrift. One could find unique hand-made bags, dresses, hats and soaps, used books, clothes and shoes.

Next edition of “I HAVE, I GIVE AND I LIVE” will be on December 3rd, from 10 AM until 2 PM, same place.

CITY AND RIVERS

As part of project “Karlovac Rivers Management and Preservation”, on Tuesday, 25th of October Eko Pan organized a workshop of SWOT and PEST analyses of Karlovac rivers. On workshop participated Eko Pan, City of Karlovac, KAZUP, Natura Viva, UZO, HEP, VIK, Tourist organization Karlovac, architect Oliver Bosanac, etc. Workshop was facilitated by mgr. Ivana Ivičić, specialized in sustainable development.

During workshops participants focused on rivers and city and their interdependence on forests, industry, infrastructure… Strenghts, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, economical, social, technical, political and environmental factors were determined.

As it was expected, in some moments an opposite opinions and ideas occured, but this was a primal vision of this project – to assemble representatives of different sectors and through constructive discussion search for common aspirations. For example, in every energetic planning of city and region it is necessary to consider all possible negative effects, and an economic value of tourism.

Karlovac rivers are recognized as a great potential, and their future will be determined through the ways in which this potentials will be used.

We hope that with this project we will successful present all advantages of planning in consolidation with principles of sustainable development and through strategy enable this ideas to find their way to realization. Surely, this is a big challenge for civil sector and for all who choose to think on longterm consequences of decisions, projects, and actions.

KARLOVAC RIVERS MANAGEMENT AND PRESERVATION

On October 18th, Eko Pan organized a press conference, presenting the results of public survey about Karlovac rivers, implemented from May until July this year as part of “Karlovac Rivers Management and Preservation” project.

In survey participated 550 citizens and more than 40 representatives of civil and private sector. Results show that citizens are emotionally bounded with rivers, that they want at least one more public beach, but also more accomodation and restaurant facilites. Survey also showed that citizens have a very low level of informational and technical knowledge, which is a good indicator to responsible institutions and NGO’s who need to develop educational projects. Representatives of industrial private sector answered that they provided all needed safety measures of possible pollutions. Representatives from touristic private sector answered that they are not completely satisfied with development of continental/river tourism and that there is an obvious lack of integral planning.

Results will be data contribution to a Strategy of sustainable development of Karlovac Rivers. Also, Thematical Councils start with work soon and during the press conference, their meaning and purpose were described. Councils members are representatives of civil, public and private sector. They will discuss about biodiversity, infrastructure, energetics, economy, agronomy, tourism, recreation, cultural and social life by rivers. Results of their work will be create Strategy draft which will be presented to the public in a first months of next year.

GREEN PHONE SERVICE – THIRD QUARTERLY REPORT

In a third quarter of 2011, Eko Pan Green Phone Service received 19 calls in total. Comparing to second quarter, this number is slightly larger, and comparing to the same period in 2010, this number is almost 100% larger. Total number of calls in first 9 months of 2011 is 61 and is approx. 70% larger comparing to the same period of 2010. Four calls were from Ličko-senjska County.

Largest number of received calls belong to WAIST category (8calls/42,1%), which follows the trend of previous years. Other calls belong to: GREEN category (5 calls/26,3%), WATERS (4 calls/21%). To category ANIMALS belong 2 calls/10%.
In waist category there is a larger number of calls about how to separate and collect different kinds of waist, which is a recognized problem on the level of a whole Karlovac county. There is no organized waist separation and no recycling yards, which are an example of best practice in other croatian counties. This solutions are cost-effective, and studies showed that with easily accessible “green islands” recycling level is increasing. Because of this, it is necessary to develop an organized system of waist collecting. Also, a continual public education is needed.

In this quarter a number of anonymous calls is not getting lower. Citizens are still afraid to give their name when calling. Also, citizens have a low trust into local government, which is understandable from perspective of a fact that very often responsible departments do not show interest in solving environmental problems.

Number of calls by men (9) is almost the same as number of calls by women (10).

Efficiency in this quarter is 57%.

This survey is part of “Karlovac Rivers Management and Preservation” project, with Eko Pan as project leader and City of Karlovac as project partner. NGO’S FAIR

Eko Pan participated on NGO’s Fair in Karlovac, on September 24th. A whole-day fair introduced all NGO’s from Karlovac; their work, members, activities, etc. Eko Pan presented its projects and activities, promoting out cotton bags for greener shopping. Thank you for visiting us!
